The Senate voted 51 to 48 in favor of Trump's request to reduce spending by $9 billion—an amount already approved by Congress.

Most of the cuts target foreign aid programs assisting countries affected by disease, war, and natural disasters. The plan also eliminates $1.1 billion in funding that was scheduled to go to the Public Broadcasting Service over the next two years.

While the $9 billion cut is small compared to the federal budget of $6.8 trillion, it represents a portion of the funds previously approved by Congress and later frozen by the Trump administration. The move is part of a broader effort to enact sweeping budget cuts, many of which are driven by the Office of Government Efficiency, overseen by billionaire Elon Musk.

The cuts must be finalized by Friday, or the request will expire, and the White House will be obligated to adhere to the congressional spending plans.
