New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sparked widespread anger among the city’s Jewish community leaders following a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account commemorating "Nakba Day." The post included a video testimony from a New York resident named Inya, who described herself as a "Nakba survivor."

In the video, Inya recounted fleeing Jerusalem with her family as a child "after the Zionists arrived in the area." Commenting on the video, Mamdani stated that her story represents one of 700,000 similar experiences.
"Today marks Nakba Day, an annual commemoration of the displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians between 1947 and 1949, during the creation of the State of Israel and the year that followed," Mamdani wrote.
He added, "Inya, a New Yorker and a Nakba survivor, shared her story with us—a story of a homeland, traditions, and a memory passed down through generations."
While Mamdani’s post garnered millions of views on the social media platform, the Hebrew news website Ynet reported that the publication triggered furious reactions from Jewish leaders in New York. Critics accused Mamdani of distorting history and ignoring the Arab nations' rejection of the 1947 UN Partition Plan.
Ynet quoted Moshe Spern, president of the Jewish Teachers Union in New York, who stated that this type of rhetoric "endangers Jews everywhere" because, according to him, it lacks full historical context.
