In a statement to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Meloni said:
“I strongly support the establishment of a Palestinian state, but I do not support recognizing it before it exists… If something that does not yet exist is recognized on paper, it might appear that the problem has been solved when in fact it has not.”
France’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September has sparked condemnation from both Israel and the United States, amid the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on Friday that recognition of a Palestinian state must be accompanied by that state's recognition of Israel.
Meanwhile, a German government spokesperson said yesterday that Berlin does not intend to recognize a Palestinian state in the near future, adding that its current priority is to achieve “long-overdue progress” toward a two-state solution. – (Agencies)
