In a press release, the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv stated that this "settlement agreement" is the outcome of years of negotiations and aims to clarify the borders and area of a Russian plot of land in West Jerusalem, Al Mamlaka TV reported.

According to the statement, the designated land will be used for constructing a complex of buildings and facilities to cater to the needs of the sub-office of the consular section at the Russian Embassy in Israel.

The embassy emphasized that this step fully serves the interests of enhancing the multifaceted friendly relations between Russia and Israel, aligning with their country's consistent approach towards a just settlement in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the key points of the agreement, describing it as a political success.

Aligning with previous effortsIn its press release, the Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that this agreement aligns with their efforts to increase the number of diplomatic missions in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, using their own phrasing.

Relations between Russia and Israel, where 15 percent of the population comes from former Soviet countries, have been strained since the Russian war in Ukraine in 2022.

Israel occupied and annexed East Jerusalem in 1967, declaring it as its "eternal capital" in 1980, a move not recognized by the international community.

In 2017, the United States relocated its embassy to Jerusalem after recognizing the city as the undivided capital of Israel. However, most countries with diplomatic relations with Israel maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv.
