Earlier this year, WhatsApp ended support for a range of Android devices running Android 4.4 (KitKat). Similarly, the company announced that iPhones running iOS versions below 15.1 would no longer support the app starting May 5.

However, Apple appeared to offer a grace period for users of older devices, which extended until June 1. With that deadline now approaching, WhatsApp has updated its support page to confirm that the app will now only work on Android devices running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer, and iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later.
What does this mean?
To continue using WhatsApp, your device must meet the following minimum software requirements:
Android: Version 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer
iPhone: Version iOS 15.1 or newer (released in October 2021)
As a result, the following iPhones will lose access to WhatsApp starting June 1:
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 5s
How to check your system version
On Android: Go to Settings > System > About Phone and check the Android version.
On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About and check your iOS version.
WhatsApp has already begun notifying users on outdated devices through multiple alerts, encouraging them to upgrade.
Time to Upgrade?
If WhatsApp is essential to you, now may be the time to consider upgrading:
Android users: Consider the newly released Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, known for being Samsung’s thinnest phone yet.
iPhone users: You might want to wait until September, when Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series with an all-new design.
