Meta is working on introducing a Username feature in WhatsApp — a long-awaited update aimed at boosting privacy and simplifying communication without the need to share phone numbers.

According to an email Meta sent to businesses, the new feature will allow both users and companies to use usernames instead of phone numbers in individual and group chats. The company says this step will provide users with greater security and confidence during interactions, particularly when communicating with business accounts.
Meta also noted that using usernames will help businesses strengthen their brand identity and build clearer relationships with customers on the platform. The feature will be optional and is expected to roll out next year after a trial phase, during which users will be able to reserve their preferred usernames before the official launch.
Competing apps such as Telegram and Signal already rely on username systems, allowing users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers.
Reports indicate that WhatsApp will enforce restrictions on usernames — they cannot begin with “www” or end with domains like “.com” or “.net.” Usernames must be between 3 and 30 characters long and may only include periods or underscores as special characters.
This new feature underscores Meta’s ongoing efforts to make WhatsApp a more secure and privacy-focused platform, particularly as the app continues to expand its role in digital commerce and online services. — Reuters
