Christopher Nolan's Homeric epic "The Odyssey" has now crossed $1.55 billion at the worldwide box office against a reported production budget of $250 million, with tracking suggesting the film could finish its theatrical run near $1.8 billion globally.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, the Universal/Syncopy release premiered in London on July 6, 2026, before opening domestically on July 17. It has already become Nolan's highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises."
The film's continued strength has been driven largely by sustained demand for premium large-format screenings, particularly Imax 70mm, which has helped it post unusually shallow weekend-to-weekend drops for a nearly three-hour, R-rated historical drama. It has also overtaken "Deadpool & Wolverine" to stand as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
With releases still rolling out in major Asian markets — South Korea, followed by China on Aug. 14 and Japan in September — the film has room to keep climbing before its run winds down, making the $1.8 billion target a plausible finish line for one of 2026's standout box office stories.
