A Long-Awaited Feature
Despite its global popularity, WhatsApp has historically relied on phone numbers as the primary means of communication. This has long raised questions about why the app lagged behind other platforms in adopting a username system.
Initial signs of this feature appeared in beta versions back in 2023, but development continued for years before nearing its official launch, according to a report by "PhoneArena."
Gradual Rollout
Recent leaks indicate that Meta has already begun a gradual rollout. Some users can now find the "Username" option within the app's settings. Once activated, users can create a unique name and use it to start conversations without sharing their phone number.
Rules and Conditions
The company has established specific rules for selecting a username:
Characters: Must contain at least one letter.
Allowed Symbols: Lowercase letters, numbers, dots (.), and underscores (_).
Restrictions: Cannot start with "www." or end with domains like ".com." It also cannot start or end with a dot.
Length: Must be between 3 and 30 characters long.
Integration with Meta Ecosystem
The feature is expected to allow users to link their existing Facebook or Instagram usernames to their WhatsApp accounts, enhancing integration across Meta's suite of apps.
Greater Privacy and a Modern Experience
This update represents a major shift toward improved privacy, as users will no longer be forced to share their personal phone numbers with strangers. It also gives the app a more modern feel, aligning it with other contemporary messaging services.
After years of development, WhatsApp finally appears ready to offer a more flexible and secure experience for its hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
