The Meta-owned messaging platform, WhatsApp, is developing a new feature for Android that will allow users to summarize multiple unread conversations. This feature aims to make it easier for users to quickly catch up on chats without having to read every single message individually.

Last year, WhatsApp launched AI-powered summaries, enabling users to securely get a brief overview of what they missed in their chats. According to WABetaInfo, a site specialized in WhatsApp updates, these summaries rely on "Private Processing" technology. This secure tech, developed by Meta, allows WhatsApp's AI features to process data in a private environment where no one—not even Meta or WhatsApp—can access the original messages or the generated summaries.
Expanding Private Processing
The Private Processing feature allows WhatsApp to implement various AI-driven functionalities without compromising user privacy. Since WhatsApp has already integrated this private summarization system, it now plans to expand it by enabling users to generate summaries for several unread conversations simultaneously.
In a future update, WhatsApp will guide users on how to create these summaries. When opening the unread chats list using the dedicated filter, users will find an option to "Get a Summary." If selected, WhatsApp will share only the most recent messages from those chats with the Private Processing system. The summary will then be generated in a secure environment, keeping the content inaccessible to WhatsApp or Meta.
User Control and Privacy
This feature will be strictly optional, meaning summaries will only be created upon a manual request from the user. Furthermore, the Private Processing feature is disabled by default. Users who wish to try AI-powered chat summaries will need to manually enable it within the app's settings.
The unread message summary feature is currently under development and is expected to be rolled out in a future update for the WhatsApp Android application.
