Many home internet users suffer from slow network speeds, which can make it difficult to stream high-quality videos or play online games smoothly. Recent reports indicate that the cause may be simpler than many people think: an old Ethernet cable connecting the modem and the router.

Experts explained that Cat5 cables, which are still common in many homes, are designed to operate at speeds of up to 100 Mbps only. Meanwhile, most modern home internet plans offer speeds ranging from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps or more. This means that using Cat5 cables can significantly reduce internet speed and cause an unstable connection, especially when multiple devices are connected or when streaming high-resolution content such as 8K videos.
Experts say checking the cable type is very easy. Users can examine the outer jacket of the cable for the printed “Cat” classification. If the cable is outdated, upgrading to Cat5e cables can significantly improve performance, as they support speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Cat6 cables offer even better performance, capable of transferring data at up to 10 Gbps over short distances and 1 Gbps over distances exceeding 100 meters.
However, experts warn against blaming the cable alone for slow internet speeds, noting that the router’s performance also plays a major role in network speed and stability. Signs that a router may need replacing include weak coverage, frequent signal drops, and slow speeds despite paying for high-speed plans.
For users who already have modern routers but still experience slow internet, reports recommend trying several solutions, such as moving the router to a central, unobstructed location, using the 5 GHz band, or installing a Mesh Wi-Fi system to reduce signal congestion and improve coverage throughout the home.
Additionally, some simple adjustments—such as replacing the router’s antenna or updating its firmware—can make a noticeable difference in connection speed and stability.
Experts emphasize that these solutions are not expensive, yet they can significantly improve the home internet experience, making them a small investment with a big impact on working from home, distance learning, and enjoying online entertainment.
