Beware of Air Conditioners: 5 Health Risks Linked to Improper Use
Improper use and poor maintenance of air conditioning units can transform them from a source of comfort into a significant health hazard, warned Dr. Sobhi Samidov, a physician at Russia's SM-Clinic.اضافة اعلان

In an interview with the Russian news outlet Mail.ru, Dr. Samidov highlighted that contaminated or incorrectly set air conditioners can easily spread infections and aggravate chronic conditions.

According to Dr. Samidov, five primary health risks are associated with the improper use of air conditioners:

1. Common Colds and Acute Respiratory Infections
Overcooling indoor spaces creates a sharp temperature contrast with the outdoors, weakening the immune system and leaving the body vulnerable to viral infections. Uncleaned filters further exacerbate the problem by circulating pathogens. Symptoms include a runny nose, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. Experts advise maintaining indoor temperatures between 22°C and 24°C (71.6°F to 75.2°F) and regularly ventilating rooms.

2. Legionnaires' Disease (Legionellosis)
Described as one of the most severe risks, Legionnaires' disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, which thrive in moist environments such as ventilation units and air conditioning systems. Transmitted through airborne droplets, it causes a severe form of pneumonia that is more dangerous than standard lung infections and can be accompanied by gastrointestinal, cardiac, and renal complications. Advanced cases may lead to acute respiratory failure and sepsis. Elderly individuals, smokers, and immunocompromised patients are particularly at risk, with no vaccine currently available.

3. Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma
Conditioning filters accumulate dust, pollen, and fungal spores over time. When the unit is activated, these allergens are dispersed into the air, triggering sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and coughing fits. Regular filter maintenance and units equipped with air-purification features are recommended to mitigate these risks.

4. Sinusitis
The continuous flow of cold, dry air dries out the nasal mucosa, compromising its natural defenses and allowing bacteria and viruses to invade the sinuses. Symptoms include persistent headaches, congestion, and discharge. Dr. Samidov advises against directing cold airflow straight at the face, maintaining proper indoor humidity, and stepping outdoors periodically.

5. Fungal Infections
The moist environment inside air conditioning units creates an ideal breeding ground for mold and fungi. Dispersed fungal spores can cause respiratory tract infections and severe allergic reactions, posing a high risk to individuals with compromised immune systems.

Dr. Samidov concluded that prevention relies on routine maintenance, timely filter replacements, avoiding excessive cooling, maintaining proper humidity levels, and ensuring adequate ventilation. — (Mail.ru)
