Russian physician Maxim Lapukhin warned that the uncontrolled intake of calcium supplements without medical supervision or health justification could lead to serious, life-threatening complications.

In an interview with the Russian newspaper Gazeta.Ru, the doctor stated: "Some people resort to taking calcium supplements randomly, believing they improve the health of hair, nails, and teeth. However, this belief is incorrect. These tissues primarily rely on keratin and sulfur-containing amino acids, while calcium's main role is limited to supporting bone health and the nervous system."
He added: "Taking calcium supplements does not improve the health of hair or nails, as calcium either goes directly to the bones or remains in the bloodstream. Nor does it benefit tooth enamel, whose formation is complete between the ages of 13 and 15 and requires fluoride found in toothpaste for its maintenance."
The doctor warned that the indiscriminate use of these supplements may lead to elevated blood calcium levels for up to eight hours after taking a dose. He added that taking them regularly without a medical need for five years could increase the risk of heart disease by 20% to 30%, and raise the risk of kidney stone formation by approximately 20%.
Lapukhin advised individuals suffering from hair loss to check their iron, copper, and zinc levels, given their essential role in keratin production, recommending obtaining these elements from natural sources such as seafood, legumes, grains, and nuts. He also warned that excessive calcium intake might hinder the absorption of iron and zinc in the body.
The physician emphasized the necessity of undergoing medical tests and consulting a doctor before taking any dietary supplement, along with checking vitamin D levels, which play a fundamental role in enhancing calcium absorption from food.
