According to details published by the New York Post, the accident occurred during the early morning hours in the El Manzano area of northern Nicaragua, when the group attempted to cross the Nahualapa River in a Toyota Hilux, before water flows caused by heavy rains caught them by surprise, turning the journey into a deadly accident.
Three victims in a tourist truck swept away
Three of the women inside the vehicle failed to survive the accident. Emma Marie Laurent died alongside Swiss tourist Noé Lina Locher, who was 20, and Karen Naomi López Montano, 19, who worked in the local hotel sector.
The truck's driver, Martín Gerardo García Herrón, managed to save himself after leaving the vehicle before the water swept it away, and the incident ended with the deaths of the three passengers and the driver's survival.
The circumstances of the accident reveal the danger of sudden changes rivers can undergo in tropical regions, as rainfall can turn waterways from places that appear safe into powerful torrents within a short time.
Nicaraguan authorities warn of the dangers of waterways
Following the incident, Rosario Murillo, Nicaragua's co-president, issued a warning about handling rivers during bad weather, noting that the calm appearance of water doesn't necessarily reflect how safe it is to cross.
She stressed that water currents can change suddenly, and that choosing an inappropriate time to cross rivers can endanger people's lives, especially with rain continuing to fall.
A moving message Emma posted a week before the accident
Among the details that drew attention after the death was announced was a post Emma shared on her social media accounts just one week before the accident, while she was in Portugal.
In her words about her outlook on life and the beauty of the world, the French influencer wrote: "I think the most beautiful people are those who know how to be amazed by the world around them," a phrase followers have been resharing since news of her passing spread.
