According to a joint press statement from the county and state health departments, the death occurred in Lewis County, in the northwestern part of the state. Health officials provided no further details about the death.
Governor Kathy Hochul said in a post on X: "This is the first measles-related death in New York in 30 years. It is a painful reminder of the risks of Washington undermining decades of progress in protecting Americans from preventable diseases."
This comes after the neighboring state of Pennsylvania confirmed five deaths from an outbreak of the disease that has infected more than 1,430 people.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. questioned the first deaths, which led to a political dispute with the state's governor, Josh Shapiro.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed only three of those deaths, a departure from usual practice, while the agency is currently working with an external group of epidemiologists to define the precise criteria for determining that a death was caused by measles.
