OpenAI has announced a new feature that allows users to communicate directly with Dot, ChatGPT’s AI agent, through familiar messaging apps without having to open the application. The move aims to make it easier to manage and track daily tasks and receive automatic updates.اضافة اعلان

According to a report published by Digital Trends on October 28, 2026, the company has begun rolling out the feature experimentally to ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, with support for Apple’s iMessage and Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is used on Android devices.

The feature allows users to send text messages, images and voice notes to Dot, assigning it specific tasks or asking it to monitor particular developments. The agent then sends proactive messages when relevant updates become available.
In a post on the ChatGPT account on X, OpenAI explained that users can now message their AI agent to assign recurring tasks or monitor topics of interest. They can use text, images or voice recordings and receive updates through messaging services that the company describes as secure.
How does Dot’s messaging feature work?
The new feature works much like exchanging messages with friends. Users can set it up by opening Dot’s profile in the ChatGPT app on a phone or computer, or through the website on a computer, and selecting the text messaging option.

Users must then verify their phone number, save the contact provided by Dot and start messaging the agent. iMessage users must use the verified phone number, while Android users must enable RCS in their messaging app.

Once the setup is complete, users can assign the agent a task, ask it to monitor a particular topic, or send images and voice recordings containing specific instructions. Dot follows up on the request and sends a message when new information is worth sharing.

The agent draws on the context of previous conversations in ChatGPT, as well as information from connected channels and services, to determine the most appropriate way to deliver updates.

However, OpenAI allows users to control how they receive notifications. They can instruct Dot to send text messages only when something urgent occurs, while routine updates remain within the ChatGPT app.

When a task requires the user’s approval before the agent can proceed, Dot sends a link that allows the user to review the request and make a decision directly in the app.
Privacy and limitations
OpenAI said the messaging feature was designed with user privacy in mind. The company explained that only the account holder can send messages to their own Dot agent, and the agent cannot message anyone else.

The company also noted that enabling the feature does not give Dot or OpenAI access to other text conversations stored on the user’s phone. Communication is limited to messages exchanged between the user and their AI agent.

Despite its capabilities, the service has some limitations. It currently supports one-to-one conversations only and cannot be used in group chats.

The feature also does not support phone calls or FaceTime video calls, although users can still contact Dot from within the ChatGPT app.
When will the feature be available?
Dot’s messaging feature is currently available on an experimental basis in the United States and is limited to ChatGPT Pro subscribers.

OpenAI has not yet announced a specific date for expanding access to users in other countries or to subscribers on other plans.

The new feature reflects the company’s broader effort to expand the role of AI agents beyond answering questions within chat applications, enabling them to monitor tasks continuously and proactively communicate with users through the messaging apps they rely on every day.
