The feature, called Third-party Chats, is currently available to a limited number of users, with a gradual rollout expected in the coming weeks.
How to Enable the Feature
Users with the latest update can activate the feature by going to Settings → Account → Third-party Chats. This allows communication with users on other messaging platforms, marking the beginning of cross-app messaging.
The Third-party Groups feature is still under development and is not yet available in the current version.
Functionality
Third-party Chats support essential messaging functions, including:
Sending and receiving text messages
Sharing images and videos
Exchanging voice messages and documents
Chats can be displayed either in the main inbox or a separate folder within the app. Users can also customize notifications, media download quality, and in-app alerts. However, features like Status, Stickers, and Disappearing Messages are not supported at this time.
Two display options are offered:
Combined Mode – shows WhatsApp and external chats in a single inbox
Separated Mode – stores external chats in a dedicated folder, allowing users to organize their messaging experience according to their preferences
Users can manage notifications from external contacts, choosing instant alerts or delayed notifications, offering more flexibility in handling external interactions.
Privacy and Security
WhatsApp confirmed that all cross-app communication is secured with end-to-end encryption, ensuring message confidentiality. However, external apps may have different privacy policies, so users are advised to review their data protection rules before starting conversations.
Previously blocked contacts on WhatsApp may be able to reach users through their accounts on external apps, depending on the rules of each platform.
Currently, WhatsApp supports integration only with BirdyChat, the first approved external app. Developers of other apps can apply for integration if they meet strict security and encryption standards. More apps are expected to join in the future.
Compliance with EU Regulations
This update aligns with the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires major messaging platforms like WhatsApp to allow interoperability with competing services. The law aims to enhance user choice, reduce digital monopolies, and maintain transparency and security in data exchange.
Through this feature, European users can communicate across different apps without installing additional platforms or creating new accounts, promoting ease of access and digital integration.
