OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, announced on Tuesday the launch of a new AI-powered web browser called “Atlas”, aiming to compete with Google’s Chrome browser.

CEO Sam Altman said in a live broadcast that the new product is “an AI-driven web browser built on ChatGPT.”
Initially available exclusively for Apple’s macOS devices, Atlas integrates ChatGPT into a sidebar, enabling generative AI to analyze the currently displayed web page and provide contextual assistance without the need to copy and paste between tabs.
The browser also allows the AI assistant to control the user’s browsing experience and cursor, performing tasks such as booking flights, filling forms, or editing documents.
Many of these features are similar to those gradually introduced in other AI-enhanced browsers like Microsoft Edge or Comet by the AI startup Perplexity, but Atlas centers around the world’s most widely used generative AI model, which OpenAI reports attracts 800 million weekly users.
The announcement caused Alphabet’s stock, Google’s parent company, to drop over 3% immediately after OpenAI released a teaser video showing browser tabs just two hours before the official launch.
In September, OpenAI scored a legal victory when a U.S. court ruled it was not required to sell Chrome, a demand previously made by the government under antitrust concerns.
OpenAI’s launch aims to strengthen its competitive position against Google, which is accelerating its own AI integration across its platforms.
