Despite ongoing criticism of Apple’s iPhone keyboard—whether due to autocorrect issues or limited customization—the iOS 18 update has introduced a smart new feature that could save users significant time.

The new capability allows users to perform calculations and unit conversions directly from the keyboard, without needing to open the Calculator app.
Your iPhone Can Calculate Directly from the Keyboard
Starting with iOS 18, users can type mathematical equations inside apps that use the keyboard, such as Messages or Notes, and the result will instantly appear as a suggestion above the keyboard.
For example, if you type:
4 + 9 =
The system will immediately display 13, which can be inserted with a single tap of the space bar.
The feature supports more than simple arithmetic, including:
Percentages
Square roots
Sequential calculations
Complex equations
However, you must type the “=” sign at the end of the equation so the system recognizes that you want the result calculated.
Instant Unit Conversions
The feature also supports quick unit conversions.
For example, typing:
16 Celsius =
will instantly convert the temperature to Fahrenheit.
You can also convert distances, lengths, currencies, and other units, such as:
2m in inches =
with the result appearing immediately in the suggestion bar.
How to Enable the Feature
If the feature is not working on your device, make sure:

More Advanced Features in Notes
Apple’s Notes app offers even more advanced math tools, allowing users to create equations using variables and automatically update results without retyping calculations.
The app also supports graphing with variables such as x and y, making it especially useful for students and users who frequently work with calculations.
While many users still prefer third-party keyboard apps such as Gboard or Microsoft SwiftKey, Apple appears to be steadily adding smarter features that make the iPhone keyboard more useful than before.
