OpenAI's latest flagship AI model has begun rolling out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, giving users of the $20-per-month plan access to GPT-6 Astra, just days after its launch.

Plus subscribers can use Astra through ChatGPT, Work, and Codex, with the rollout expanding to more accounts over time. OpenAI says the rollout is gradual, so the model may not appear for all users immediately.
Astra is not currently available within regular ChatGPT conversations for Plus subscribers.
Using the model falls within the existing usage limits of the Plus subscription, with no need for an additional subscription. Subscribers get a limited amount of Astra usage, with the option to purchase additional usage via credits once the included quota is used up.
What Do Plus Subscribers Get?
OpenAI unveiled Astra on September 3. The model is designed to handle tasks such as writing code, researching topics, running programs, and completing long, complex professional tasks.
Astra can also create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, adhering to existing templates and adapting to changes in instructions as work progresses.
OpenAI says the model has become better at retaining prior requirements and instructions during long tasks, rather than losing track of the original request as work continues.
Why Does Astra Outperform GPT-5.6 Sol?
Tests conducted by OpenAI show a notable improvement in Astra's performance compared to the GPT-5.6 Sol model.
In the TerminalBench 4.0 test, which measures the ability to carry out complex tasks within command-line environments, Astra scored 57.9%, compared to 37.3% for the Sol model.
In the OSWorld 2.0 test, Astra scored 72.6%, completing tasks in an average time of about 40 minutes, compared to a score of 65.7% for Sol, which took about 75 minutes on average.
Long tasks also appear to be one of Astra's key strengths. In OpenAI's long-context test, spanning from 512,000 to one million tokens, Astra scored 96.3%, compared to 73.8% for Sol.
That said, it's worth noting these results come from tests conducted by OpenAI itself, so actual results in day-to-day use may vary depending on the nature of the tasks users ask Astra to perform.
What About Free-Tier Users?
OpenAI has not yet announced whether Astra will become available to free-tier ChatGPT users, or when that might happen.
There is a precedent that may offer a hint at the company's likely approach: free-tier users never got access to GPT-5.6 Sol, which remained limited to paid plans. Instead, OpenAI gave them GPT-5.6 Luna, a lighter, faster version from the same family, about a month after Sol's launch.
The company may follow a similar approach with its sixth-generation models going forward, giving free users a less capable model instead of Astra itself.
However, this remains speculation based on how OpenAI handled the previous generation, as the company has not announced a lighter model from the GPT-6 family, nor confirmed whether any version of this family will reach free-tier users.
