Greater Tafileh Municipality has begun installing rooftop solar systems on its buildings, as a national programme to cut municipal electricity costs moves into the southern governorates.

The scheme is run by the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund, part of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security funding 90 per cent of its roughly JD3.4 million cost.
Mohammad Al-Karimin, who heads the Greater Tafileh Municipality committee, said the systems will reduce electricity bills and operating costs, freeing money for services and infrastructure. Extending the work southward after completing it in the north reflects a wider push into renewable energy and lower emissions, Al-Karimin added.
The programme covers more than 100 municipalities and about 188 buildings, with over 200 systems and a combined capacity of around 3.4 megawatts, according to the ministry. It is expected to generate roughly 1,400 megawatt-hours a year, cut electricity costs by about JD550,000 annually, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 3,838 tonnes.
More than 550 municipal staff are to be trained to operate and maintain the systems. The first phase, completed in 2024, installed 29 systems with a total capacity of 650 kilowatts and produced savings of about JD198,000 a year.
Shobak Municipality, among the first to benefit, saved roughly JD18,500 annually from a 100-kilowatt system generating 156 megawatt-hours.
