A common fruit may be carrying dangerous Salmonella bacteria, prompting a voluntary recall of mangoes in several US states.
Earlier this summer, jalapeño peppers served at Chipotle and other restaurants were linked to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak. Now, mangoes may also be at risk of carrying bacteria that can cause illness.

According to a notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on August 29, Panorama Produce is voluntarily recalling 302 cases of Martina mangoes in four states due to possible Salmonella contamination.
No illnesses linked to the recall have been reported so far. However, the FDA warns that people infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, which can sometimes be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to Prevention.
In rarer cases, Salmonella can cause more serious and potentially life-threatening infections, particularly among young children, older adults, people with weakened immune systems and others who are medically vulnerable.
The recall covers 302 cases of mangoes sold at select Walmart stores in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The mangoes were packaged in boxes labeled “Martina”, with each fruit carrying a light-blue sticker reading “Agrofepac, Product of Mexico.”
As noted, no illnesses have so far been associated with the recalled mangoes. Nevertheless, the FDA is urging anyone who has these mangoes at home to dispose of them immediately or return them to the place of purchase.
