Huawei has revealed its new rival to Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold: a phone that folds twice, offering storage of up to 2TB and a striking design, particularly in its purple color option.

Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold may have already disappeared from store shelves, but the tri-fold phone race shows no signs of slowing down. Huawei has opened pre-orders in China for the Mate XT 2 ahead of its official launch on September 7.
The phone's price remains unknown, but Huawei has now revealed its color options and memory configurations, along with a major redesign that could make the device more practical compared to previous versions.
While boosting the phone's durability was one of the company's top priorities, the design itself looks highly eye-catching. Huawei will offer the Mate XT 2 in dark black, pure white, and "Jin Purple."
The black and white versions come with gold-colored frames, while the purple version appears to be the most attention-grabbing. Huawei's Ultimate Design phones have always been known for their luxurious look, and this phone is no exception.
Huawei Sticks with the Tri-Fold Concept
The original Huawei Mate XT used a Z-shaped folding mechanism, leaving part of the flexible screen exposed when the phone was closed.
While the original phone's design was impressive in practice, having part of the foldable screen left exposed naturally raised durability concerns. For this reason, Huawei worked to make the second generation more resilient.
The roughly 10-inch flexible display now folds inward from both sides, while a separate screen on the exterior handles the phone's everyday functions.
This folding approach resembles the one Samsung chose for the Galaxy Z TriFold, where closing the device fully protects the flexible screen inside the phone.
The company is clearly emphasizing durability, with promotional clips showing the Mate XT 2 undergoing repeated drop tests as well as exposure to pressurized water, although Huawei has not yet disclosed an official IP rating for the device.
2TB of Storage in a Phone That Turns Into a Tablet
All currently listed Mate XT 2 versions come with 16GB of RAM, with storage options of 512GB or 1TB.
A 1TB version is also available equipped with Huawei's privacy screen technology.
The purple version of the Mate XT 2 can be obtained with 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage, along with the privacy screen and an included stylus. Huawei has not yet announced pricing for any of these versions.
Pre-orders are currently limited to the Chinese market. Standard versions are expected to begin shipping by October 31, while Huawei will reveal the remaining details at its launch event scheduled for September 7.
The phone is expected to carry a very high price tag. The original Mate XT launched at around $2,800, a price close to that of Samsung's original Galaxy Z TriFold at $2,899.
Despite the high price, available units of the device sold out after it was released in a deliberately limited production run. Reports suggest Samsung is already developing a new generation of its tri-fold phone with a redesigned hinge, though the company has not yet officially announced this version.
Huawei, meanwhile, has already begun rolling out the new generation of its tri-fold phone, opening pre-orders for the Mate XT 2. If the purple version looks as striking in person as it does in photos, Samsung's next-generation phone will face a formidable rival to beat.
