According to the report, issued by the Central Bank, the number of checks circulated in Jordan reached 16,185,312 in 2018, before decreasing to 14,230,234 checks in 2019.

The use of checks in Jordan declined again in 2020, reaching a total of 10,107,035 checks.

Checks used in the country slightly increased in 2021, reaching 10,172,297 checks, before rising again in 2022 to reach 10,270,564 checks.

Possible causes
The general decrease in the use of checks is attributed to the continuous development of the Jordanian banking sector and the emergence of new and diverse payment methods provide alternatives to checks, according to the Central Bank. They also emphasize the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Central Bank considers that these new methods compete with checks in terms of ease of use, lower risks, and costs for the benefiting parties.
