Planning Ministry, UAE fund launch grain silo expansion in Juwaida

AMMAN — Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Al-Shraideh inaugurated a project to expand grain silos in the Juwaida complex in the central region on Tuesday, according to local news outlets. The project is funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), through a grant from the Emirati government allocated to Jordan within the framework of the Gulf grant.اضافة اعلان

The expansion, which includes building 24 new silos with a capacity of 120,000 tonnes, will increase Jordan’s capacity to store grain. The ADFD funded the project through a $33 million grant while financing the building of another 28 silos in Aqaba, with a total capacity of 100,000 tonnes of grain, also through a $37.5 million grant.

Shraideh said that the launching of two vital projects as part of efforts to implement the national food security strategy, which aims to raise storage capacity of silos in the Kingdom in order to enhance stocks of strategic crops.
The project has increased storage capacities in Jordan by 220,000 tonnes of grain.
He lauded support provided by the UAE through the ADFD within the framework of the Gulf grants and pledges, which helped execute priority strategic projects in a number of sectors.

Director General of the ADFD Mohammed Saif Al-Suwaidi attended the ceremony.

He underlined the UAE and Jordan’s distinguished historical relations, stressing the keenness of his country’s leadership to provide all forms of support to Jordan to contribute to achieving the comprehensive development process in order to stimulate economic activity and achieve sustainable development.

He added that strategic projects financed by ADFD will contribute to achieving food security by maintaining the strategic stock of basic food commodities for Jordan.

Imad Al-Tarawneh, the director general of the Jordanian General Company for Silos and Supply, said that in light of the regional and international efforts to curb inflation and control supply chains, the project has contributed to reducing the impact of the global crisis on Jordan. The project has increased storage capacities in Jordan by 220,000 tonnes of grain, which helped raise the strategic stock by extending the storage period by an additional three months, which enabled Jordan to provide a safe strategic stock of wheat.
