The media office of the Central Bank of Syria explained on Sunday that starting July 31, 2026, old banknotes will lose their legal tender status and become legally invalid for circulation or conducting any financial transactions.
Regarding the withdrawal operations for old banknotes, the office stated that they will commence on July 31 for a duration of five years. These operations will be executed exclusively through the Central Bank of Syria in Damascus, serving as the sole accredited center to receive withdrawal requests, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Concerning the conditions for submitting a withdrawal request, the Central Bank stated that requests must contain a minimum of 100 banknotes of any denomination. Requests below this quantity will not be accepted. Upon verification and approval, the due amount will be transferred to the specified bank account in the new Syrian lira.
The bank clarified that the process of withdrawing old banknotes will be conducted without charging any commissions, fees, taxes, or expenses. It further noted that effective July 31, 2026, the term "Syrian lira" in all official decisions, instructions, and dealings shall refer exclusively to the new Syrian lira.
The Central Bank urged citizens to obtain information regarding withdrawal procedures solely through official channels, strictly follow announced instructions, and avoid rumors or unofficial sources.
Legal Tender Status
It is worth noting that legal tender status refers to the legal attribute granted by the state to its national currency, making it a mandatory and lawful means of payment for settling debts, discharging financial liabilities, and conducting transactions within the country.
On May 30, the Central Bank of Syria issued a decision extending the currency exchange period by an additional thirty days, starting July 1, 2026.
