Energy Minister: National Petroleum Company awards tenders to drill 80 new gas wells.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Al-Kharabsheh stated on Sunday that production at the Risha gas field is expected to reach approximately 418 million cubic feet per day by 2029, compared to Jordan's power grid demand of around 330 to 340 million cubic feet per day.
Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that, as part of its strategic vision, the recommendations of the Economic Modernization Vision, and the plan to secure energy supply at affordable costs, the ministry is actively working to deliver natural gas to various industrial clusters across the Kingdom.
He added that the plan aims to connect gas to various industrial clusters within three years, noting that this initiative will contribute to supplying energy at competitive prices.
He explained that the ministry is working on piping gas to industrial clusters, in addition to employing compressed natural gas (CNG) stations to supply industries located outside major industrial zones via tanker trucks.
He highlighted the presence of three gas compression and transport stations used to supply various economic sectors, noting that connected industrial clusters include the Southern Industrial Zone in Aqaba, Quweira, the Qastal Industrial Area, and the Hashemiya zone.
He revealed that the ministry will soon award a tender and sign an agreement to deliver natural gas to the Muwaqqar Industrial Zone and the Ma'an Development Zone, adding that technical studies are underway to extend gas connections to the Mafraq Development Zone and the New Zarqa Industrial Area.
Al-Kharabsheh stated that the plan aims to complete gas delivery to all industrial clusters that use or require natural gas as a replacement for diesel or heavy fuel oil within three years.
He added that delivering gas helps generate demand for domestically discovered gas at the Risha field, which the National Petroleum Company (NPC) is actively extracting, noting that the NPC has awarded tenders to drill 80 wells.
Al-Kharabsheh explained that parallel to drilling operations, the NPC is floating a tender to construct a pipeline to transport gas produced from the Risha field and connect it to the Arab Gas Pipeline.
He noted that the regasification facility recently inaugurated by the Prime Minister forms a key part of the necessary infrastructure, as it converts imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) from global markets back into gaseous form to be pumped through pipelines, serving as a permanent replacement for the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that had been chartered for years.
