Wheat supply in Jordan is sufficient for 14.8 months

AMMAN — Anwar Ajarmeh, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Jordanian General Company for Silos and Supply contended on Thursday,  that the wheat storage in Jordan could supply the local market for 14.8 months, according to Al-Mamlaka TV. اضافة اعلان

Statistics by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply showed that around 1.388 million tonnes of wheat available in Jordan, of which 858,000 are stored in the general company’s silos and in the ministry’s pits, while around 480,000 tonnes are contracted upon, according to Ajarmeh.

He added that the ministry preserves around 940,000 tonnes of barley, of which 337,000 tonnes are stored in the company’s silos, and 603 are contracted upon, adding these amounts could supply the market for 11.7 months.

Ajarmeh pointed out that the ministry will continue to purchase additional amounts to increase the strategic stock despite the challenges imposed on the world; including transport, lack of supply, the increased demand on food in light of its globally increased prices.

The chairman added that the company’s mill can supply the local market with 400 tonnes of flour daily.

Ajarmeh also stressed that Jordan imports around 70 percent of food staple and around 95 percent of wheat, barley, corn, Soybean, and other grains, adding that Jordan is ranked 62 out of 133 countries on the food security indicator.
 
The chairman also said that His Majesty King Abdullah gave directives to the government to set forth a system to achieve progress in food security and enhance the Kingdom’s independence in this field to counter any threat or impact as well as to guarantee the availability of high-quality produce.
