Amman – Despite widespread use of social media messaging platforms, particularly WhatsApp, the number of traditional cellular short messages (SMS) sent by Jordanians increased by 46% during the first half of this year.

Figures monitored by Al-Ghad through the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission show that Jordanians exchanged 767 million SMS messages in the first half of 2025, compared to 524 million in the same period last year.
According to official data, these messages were distributed across the first two quarters as follows: approximately 423 million in the first quarter and 344 million in the second quarter.
The data also indicated that the average number of SMS messages per mobile subscription per month reached around 14 messages in Q2 2025, up from 12 messages during the same period in 2024.
The increase in SMS traffic coincided with a rise in mobile subscriptions, which reached 8.22 million by the end of June 2025, compared to 7.91 million in Q2 2024—a 4% growth.
Additional data from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission revealed that 68% of subscriptions are prepaid, while 32% are postpaid. Subscriptions for voice and data lines accounted for 83%, with data-only subscriptions making up 17%.
The mobile phone penetration rate reached 69.7% of the total population by the end of Q2 2025, compared to 68.1% in Q2 2024, and 107% relative to the population aged over 15 years.
Official statistics also showed that mobile voice traffic in Q2 2025 totaled approximately 7.1 billion minutes, with 97% domestic and 3% international.
Meanwhile, mobile broadband data usage reached around 724 million gigabytes in Q2 2025, up from approximately 627 million gigabytes in Q2 2024.
