According to the statement, President Trump held a successful meeting with President Xi, during which the two sides discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The statement did not address discussions regarding Taiwan, the self-governing democratic island, despite Xi having previously warned that mishandling the issue could lead to conflict between China and the United States.

The White House also stated that both leaders agreed on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to support the free flow of global energy supplies.

Earlier in the day, China’s Foreign Ministry announced that Trump and Xi discussed developments in the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula during their summit in Beijing.

The ministry said the two presidents exchanged views on major international and regional issues, particularly the situation in the Middle East, the crisis in Ukraine, and developments on the Korean Peninsula, without providing further details.

Trump began his official visit to China on Wednesday and met Xi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where he told the Chinese president that the two global powers would have a “great future.”

During the meeting, Trump said: “It is an honor to be with you. It is an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the United States will be better than ever.”

He added that both countries would enjoy “a great future.”
