The new design features the word "Liberty" and the phrase "In God We Trust" on the front, alongside the dates "1776-2026", while the reverse shows the bald eagle inspired by the presidential seal. This design is a modification of a draft revealed in October.

The previous draft showed Trump raising his fist, accompanied by the phrase "Fight, Fight, Fight," in reference to the assassination attempt he survived during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump said he felt "proud" of the coin's issuance, adding in an interview with Fox Business: "They gave me a coin. This is very unusual, as I understand it."

Critics have raised questions regarding the legality of the design. A US law dating back to 1866 states that no living person's portrait may be used on US currency, but this provision applies to paper money issued by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, whereas the US Mint handles the issuance of coins.

Congress passed a law in 2020 authorizing the Treasury to mint one-dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, but that law prohibited including any designs depicting people who are still living.

The Treasury Department announced in a statement that the coin is currently in production and is being minted in Philadelphia.
