On Friday, the Kremlin denied speculation that Lavrov had lost President Vladimir Putin’s support following the suspension of efforts to arrange a summit between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump last month.
Reuters and other media outlets reported that Washington canceled the summit after the Russian Foreign Ministry sent a message stating that Moscow was unwilling to compromise on its demands regarding Ukraine.
The Financial Times cited a source indicating that Lavrov’s conversation with Rubio caused Washington to hesitate in holding the summit.
Lavrov told the Russian state news agency, “Secretary of State Marco Rubio and I understand the need for regular communication.”
He added, “It is important to discuss the Ukrainian issue and advance the bilateral agenda. For this reason, we communicate by phone and are ready to hold face-to-face meetings if necessary.”
