U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that the United States and China have reached a "stability" in their long-contentious relationship, ahead of President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Beijing in late March.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Caribbean nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Rubio stated, "I think we have reached a stage where there is at least a kind of strategic stability in the relationship." He added, "I believe both nations have concluded that an all-out global trade war between the U.S. and China would cause severe damage to both parties and the world."
Rubio, long known for his hawkish stance on China, noted that while the U.S. views the world's second-largest economy as a global competitor, Washington remains committed to addressing concerns and curbing Beijing's dominance over supply chains through source diversification.
Key Diplomatic Objectives:
Trilateral Nuclear Deal: Rubio pledged to continue pressuring Beijing to negotiate a trilateral nuclear agreement involving the United States and Russia. This follows a high-level meeting in Geneva this week between U.S., Chinese, and Russian representatives after the expiration of the New START treaty.
Nuclear Arsenal: While China continues to rapidly expand its nuclear arsenal, it remains below the levels of the U.S. and Russian stockpiles. Rubio remarked, "The Chinese have publicly said they are not ready to do this [deal], but we will continue to push because we believe it would be good for the world."
Upcoming Presidential Visit: President Donald Trump is set to visit China from March 31 to April 2, marking his first official visit of his second term. Rubio confirmed he will accompany the President in his dual capacity as Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.
Interestingly, Rubio was sanctioned by China in 2020 during his tenure as a Senator due to his advocacy for human rights in Hong Kong and the Uyghur minority. His current diplomatic role marks a significant shift in the operational dynamic between the two powers.
