Royal Jordanian Airlines said its operations were significantly affected by the closure or restriction of airspace in the region during Middle East tensions, though services did not come to a complete halt.
The airline stated that flights to destinations with open airspace during the war operated “regularly and safely,” with around 70% of its network continuing as normal while precautionary measures were implemented to ensure the highest safety standards.
It explained that some flight routes were adjusted to avoid conflict zones, noting that keeping airspace open amid regional tensions was “very costly” for the airline, but described it as a “national duty” to transport passengers.
The company also reported a significant decline in bookings to and from Jordan and a drop in passenger numbers to certain destinations due to ongoing uncertainty in the region.
Flight Routes
Regarding route management, Royal Jordanian said it rerouted several flights along longer alternative paths, resulting in increased flight durations and higher operating costs, particularly in fuel consumption and insurance.
It noted that during the tensions, flights were redirected southward, avoiding western and northern airspace, and using Egyptian airspace to reach destinations in Europe and the United States.
Each of these flights added approximately 30 minutes, creating substantial financial burdens for the airline.
Ticket Prices
On ticket pricing, the airline stated that global carriers increased fares by 100% to 150% or imposed additional fees. Royal Jordanian also raised ticket prices due to higher fuel costs and route changes.
This occurred alongside declining travel demand, placing the airline in a “difficult equation” between covering costs and maintaining load factors.
Royal Jordanian added that it suspended flights during the war to destinations with closed airspace, including Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Damascus, while continuing operations to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Europe, North America, and North Africa.
Crisis Management
The airline said it activated advanced crisis management and business continuity plans, enabling rapid response to operational changes while maintaining service continuity. Measures included rescheduling flights, adjusting routes, and enhancing coordination with local and international authorities to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
Royal Jordanian affirmed its continued investment in developing operations and strengthening future readiness to support growth and enhance competitiveness in the aviation sector.
Support for Passengers and Supply Chains
The airline also emphasized its efforts to keep passengers informed through effective communication channels, offering flexible booking and modification options, and allowing ticket refunds under eased policies. It also provided ground support services for passengers from Syria and Iraq, helping reduce the impact of the crisis and maintain customer confidence.
As a strategic partner to the Kingdom, Royal Jordanian highlighted its role in maintaining supply chains by transporting medical supplies and food shipments, supporting food security, and contributing to tourism promotion by reinforcing Jordan’s image as an accessible destination under the message “Our skies are open.”
