The number of undernourished people, according to the report, reached one million in the period 2018-2020, while about 300,000 were undernourished in the 2004-2006 period.

The undernourishment index, as per FAO, is an estimate of the proportion of the population that normally consumes insufficient food to meet the caloric energy levels needed to maintain a normal and healthy life.

According to the report, Jordan is among 23 countries and territories that have experienced food insecurity due to conflict; in Jordan’s case, hosting Syrian refugees was a contributing factor.

The Food Security Survey in Jordan for 2013/2014, carried out by the Department of Statistics, shows that 6,200 families in the Kingdom (28,078 individuals) were not food secure, compared to 3,800 families in 2010, an increase of 61 percent.

Food security is the ability of a family to secure enough food to meet the nutritional needs of its members, while in case of food insecurity, people are undernourished due to lack of food or inability to obtain it.
