During a session of the House of Representatives on Monday, Minister Al-Khalayleh addressed remarks made by MP Ali Al-Khalayleh regarding the committee of 14 members, describing them as “unacceptable.” He noted that the committee includes prominent scholarly and national figures, including the Chief Justice, the Grand Mufti, and the Imam of the Hashemite Holy Shrine, in addition to representatives from official institutions such as the Greater Amman Municipality, the Ministries of Education and Interior, and oversight authorities.

MP Ali Al-Khalayleh had criticized the structure of the Islamic Awqaf Council, which manages nearly 800 million Jordanian dinars in endowment funds, describing the current legislation as “weak” and unacceptable, and suggested establishing an Islamic bank to manage these funds.

He also questioned the nature of the allowances received by the 14-member committee and the reason for including representatives from the Ministries of Education, Interior, Local Administration, and the Greater Amman Municipality in the body that invests Awqaf funds.

The House referred two draft laws—the amendments to the Awqaf and Islamic Holy Sites Law of 2025 and the Sharia Execution Law of 2025—to the Legal Committee.

The proposed amendments to the Sharia Execution Law would allow the implementation of alternative penalties.
