Jordan is set to become the first Arab country to develop and launch a national index to measure and evaluate “future cities,” a critical initiative aimed at improving quality of life and enhancing the efficiency of urban services. The project emphasizes sound urban planning, modern technologies, and sustainability principles, according to the Public Corporation for Housing and Urban Development.

The initiative follows the corporation’s approval on Monday of the standards and foundations for establishing future cities, presented during a workshop attended by representatives from government and private sectors, universities, experts, and young talents.
Director-General of the Corporation, Eng. Jumana Al-Atiyat, stated that the key performance indicators (KPIs) will serve as an essential tool to assess the performance of Jordanian cities on their path toward becoming “cities of the future.”
She highlighted that the launch of these “Standards and Foundations for Future Cities” represents a national achievement aligned with royal ambitions and a concrete translation of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s vision for comprehensive urban modernization. This model is distinguished as the first Arab framework to include a measurement standard managed by a government body for future cities.
Al-Atiyat emphasized that the model is designed to be adaptable and periodically updated, recommending evaluations every three years to reassess current realities based on global best practices, emerging trends, and expert insights.
The launch of the index coincides with the unveiling of the “Amra City Project,” which will be designed and planned according to the latest planning and sustainability standards.
