This announcement was made during a meeting on Tuesday with the Parliamentary Health and Food Committee, chaired by MP Ahmad Al-Sarahneh, to review the JFDA's regulatory efforts in ensuring the safety of food and medicine across the Kingdom.
Regulatory Actions and Ramadan Statistics
Obeidat clarified that the disposal of food items and the closure of violating shops occur only after unfitness for consumption is proven. She emphasized that:
High-Risk Items: Immediate disposal is limited to high-risk materials.
Legal Action: Severe violations are referred to the Public Prosecutor for necessary legal measures.
Legal Framework: All regulatory procedures are based on Food and Drug Law No. 30.
During the current month of Ramadan, JFDA teams have already executed approximately 6,400 inspection tours, leading to:
244 facility suspensions.
24 closures.
The disposal of nearly 3 tons of juices.
Parliamentary Oversight
MP Ahmad Al-Sarahneh underscored the JFDA's vital role in public health, noting that being in direct contact with the citizens' food and medicine places a massive responsibility on the administration. He stressed the need for a balanced enforcement of penalties—ensuring they are neither excessively harsh nor lenient toward violations that jeopardize health.
Committee members MPs Shaher Shatnawi, Hakam Al-Ma'adat, Abdel Nasser Al-Khasawneh, and Hayel Ayash reiterated the importance of stringent oversight and deterrent penalties to maintain the safety of Jordanian citizens.
