The Jordan Food and Drug Administration has closed the production lines of four establishments found in breach of gluten-free requirements, following a field survey of 61 bakeries, restaurants, cafés and shops.

JFDA Director General Rana Obeidat said the survey covered licensing status and laboratory results on samples taken from the premises. Most licensed establishments were found to comply, Obeidat said, while the four in breach were closed until they correct their practices.
Manufacturing, preparing, selling or packaging any product as gluten-free, or advertising it as such, requires JFDA approval. Trading in these products without it is prohibited.
The administration reminded producers that a gluten-free product is not simply a matter of ingredients. Preventing cross-contamination during manufacturing and preparation applies to raw materials, surfaces, tools, equipment and staff practices.
Consumers should check that an establishment holds JFDA approval before buying or ordering anything labelled gluten-free, the administration said. Approved premises are required to display that approval where customers can see it.
