AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned on
Friday the provocative acts of and incitement by extremist Jewish groups Thursday night in occupied East Jerusalem, according to a ministry statement.
The spokesperson for the ministry, Ambassador Daifallah
Al-Fayez, said that the Israeli authorities bear full responsibility, according
to international law, for allowing these groups to reach the Old City, which
resulted in these extremist Jewish groups chanting racist slogans and attacking
Jerusalemites.
Fayez called on the Israeli authorities to
abide by their obligations with respect to international and humanitarian law to
refrain from actions that may prejudice or restrict [OR1] the residents of the Old City.
The spokesperson also condemned the
restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities on worshipers’ access to
Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif to perform Friday prayer, and demanded that
all such restrictions be removed. He also called on the Israeli authorities to
respect the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, the right of worshipers’
unimpeded access to Al-Aqsa Mosque, and to respect the historical and legal
status quo.
Fayez also called on the international
community to shoulder its responsibilities in pressuring Israel to stop the
violations and provocations in the Old City and Al-Haram Al-Sharif.
