The voluntary return of Syrian refugees from Jordan to their home country has seen a significant decline compared to previous periods, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).اضافة اعلان

The agency reported that 167,000 refugees returned from Jordan to Syria between December 8, 2024, and the end of October 2025. In October alone, 13,000 returned, representing a 20% decrease compared to September of the same year.

Data shows that the total number of Syrian refugees who have returned from Jordan reached approximately 170,478 as of November 15, 2025, with expectations that the figure could rise to nearly 200,000 by the end of the year.

UNHCR stated that the number of Syrian refugees registered in Jordan reached around 475,000 by the end of October 2025. About 81% reside within host communities, while children account for roughly 48% of the total.

Many refugees indicated that they prefer postponing their return to Syria until after the winter season due to housing conditions, transportation challenges during cold weather, and ongoing school obligations. Return rates also tend to drop during Ramadan, as many families choose to spend the holy month in Jordan before heading back. With Ramadan expected to fall in winter 2026, returns are likely to be delayed until after Eid al-Fitr.

UNHCR analysis shows that return patterns are highly seasonal and influenced by factors including the security situation in Syria, the academic calendar, weather conditions, and public holidays.

The agency confirmed that its voluntary return cash assistance program continues for refugees in the Azraq and Zaatari camps, with most beneficiaries expressing satisfaction. The most common spending priorities included transportation, debt repayment, and essential items such as food and clothing.

This initiative complements UNHCR’s transportation support program. In October, the agency organized transport for around 600 refugees from camps and host communities to Syria. Since the start of the initiative on January 20, 2025, transportation assistance has been provided to nearly 9,900 refugees.

The report also noted that 61 refugees left Jordan in October 2025 to third countries for resettlement.
