According to Dr. Konkoff, studies indicate that regular intake of fish oil improves immune cell function, helping the body fight infections more effectively.
He explains: “Fish oil is an oily liquid, amber or bright yellow in color, with a distinct taste and smell. It is extracted from the liver of cod, mackerel, herring, and other fish, and contains many beneficial nutrients for the body.”
Key Nutrients in Fish Oil:
Omega-3: Polyunsaturated fatty acids that reduce the risk of blood clots, accelerate cell regeneration, improve skin health, and maintain normal blood pressure.
Vitamin D: Supports immune system function and aids calcium absorption, essential for musculoskeletal development, especially in children.
Vitamin A: Regulates metabolism, maintains healthy mucous membranes, protects against environmental damage, and enhances the body’s defensive properties.
Vitamin E: Supports blood clotting and promotes muscle mass growth.
Antioxidants: Slow cellular aging and eliminate free radicals from the body.
Dr. Konkoff also notes that fish oil contains small amounts of iodine, sulfur, phosphorus, bromine, and other elements, though these are not considered therapeutically significant. The oil oxidizes easily in the body, which facilitates nutrient absorption and enhances its benefits.
Fish oil is particularly useful during the cold season when the risk of colds increases, provided that personal health conditions are considered and recommended dosages are followed to avoid side effects. Proper adherence makes fish oil a beneficial dietary supplement that supports overall health and disease resistance.
Contraindications and Precautions:
People should avoid fish oil in cases of: allergic reactions to fish or seafood, diabetes, urinary stones, chronic pancreatitis, exacerbated gallbladder inflammation, pancreatic infections, excess vitamin D levels, blood clotting disorders, and thyroid diseases.
The expert emphasizes the importance of following the correct dosage, as exceeding it may cause side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or worsening chronic conditions. If any of these symptoms occur, use should be discontinued and a physician consulted.
