The Brazilian government has decided to delay the appointment of Israel’s new ambassador, according to the Brazilian newspaper Gazeta do Povo on Monday. The decision deepens the diplomatic crisis between Brazil and Israel, led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, against the backdrop of the genocide in Gaza.

Earlier this year, Gali Dagan, Israel’s former ambassador to Colombia, was appointed to replace Israel’s current ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Zohar-Zonenschein, who left his post last week. However, according to the report, Dagan has not received Brazil’s approval for his appointment.
This development comes after Brazil’s decision late last month to withdraw from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), a key body in combating what is termed antisemitism.
Relations between Israel and Brazil have not improved since then — instead, they have worsened. Shortly after the withdrawal, Lula’s government announced that Brazil was joining the case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
At this stage, without approval for Dagan’s appointment, Brazil remains without an accredited Israeli ambassador. At the same time, Brazil’s ambassador to Israel has not visited the country since February of last year, after being recalled for consultations and returned to Brasília.
