Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh of Sudan, Egypt’s Zamalek, Tunisia’s Club Africain, Morocco’s MAS Fez, and Algeria’s MC Alger have all reached the Round of 32 of the CAF Champions League, results that strengthen the Arab presence in Africa’s premier club competition.

Sudanese clubs advance
Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh won their second-leg preliminary-round matches the day before yesterday against Burundi’s Aigle Noir and Zambia’s Power Dynamos, respectively. Al-Hilal beat Aigle Noir 1–0 at home through Ahmed Salem, confirming their progression after a 2–0 first-leg win and sealing the tie 3–0 on aggregate. Al-Merrikh also booked their place by beating Power Dynamos again 1–0, the same scoreline as the first leg; Madagascar’s Jao Rasoanimaro scored the only goal, sending Al-Merrikh through 2–0 on aggregate.
Zamalek cruise through
Egypt’s Zamalek advanced to the same round after beating Djibout’s AS Port over the two legs of the Round of 64. They won the second leg 4–0 on Saturday at Cairo Stadium, having also won the first leg played at the same venue by agreement 2–1. Abdullah El-Said scored a hat-trick for Zamalek in the 6th, 8th, and 18th minutes, and Nasser Mansi added a fourth in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
Club Africain edge past Djoliba
Tunisia’s Club Africain returned from Mali with a valuable 2–2 draw against Djoliba. Kouyaté gave the hosts the lead in the 16th minute, but two minutes later Tunisian champions Club Africain equalized through Mohamed Sadok Gadida. Djoliba regained the lead via Fernando Daco in the 58th minute, before Club Africain leveled again in the 83rd minute through Cameroonian player Tadius Nking. Club Africain advanced 3–2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 1–0, reaching the Round of 32.
MAS Fez and MC Alger also through
Moroccan league champions MAS Fez also progressed, drawing 0–0 away to Burkina Faso champions Rahimo the day before yesterday. Having won the first leg 4–1, they advanced by the same aggregate scoreline. MC Alger faced no difficulty overcoming Niger’s Niger Tornadoes (Nigelec), winning 5–0 after a goalless first leg, to secure their place in the next round.
