AMMAN — Wehdat coach, Abdullah Abu Zema, has expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance against the Iranian Foolad on Saturday, despite their 1-0 loss. اضافة اعلان

“I am generally satisfied with the team’s level. Our plan was to play cautiously in the first half then go on the offensive in the second,” Abu Zema said in a press statement following the match.

He added: “Unfortunately, the Iranian team scored a penalty before the end of the first half, which completely changed the course of the match. They then took hold of the game’s tempo for a long time. We needed to score but we were not lucky.”

The two teams — in Group D —faced off as part of the second round of the AFC Champions League at the King Fahad International Stadium in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Foolad’s Brazilian striker, Luciano Pereira Mendes scored the match’s only goal at 44 minutes.

The second match in Group D featuring the Saudi Al-Nassr against Qatar’s Al-Sadd ended in the former’s win against their opponents 3-1.

Al-Nassr currently has lead in its respective group with a score of two points, followed by Foolad in second place (goal difference), while Wehdat and Sadd have one point each.

The third round of Group D matches will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) between Sadd and Wehdat, and Foolad and Nassr.

The winner of each group and the best six runner ups will qualify for the 16-team playoffs.

Wehdat’s doctor, Muayyad Omar said that the inuries of Firas Shalbaieh and Abdullah Diar are “not cause for concern”, noting that they are just minor bruises.

“We have finished assessing Firas Shalbaieh’s injury with an ultrasound  and things are looking really well as he will be able to resume training; whereas Abdullah Diar sustained a brusie on his foot. The medical team will work to prepare players adequately so that they can be among the coach’s options before facing the Qatari Sadd.”
