Mustard oil has always been strong, earthy, and undeniably effective; it is the kind of oil our mothers and grandmothers relied on for everything from treating colds to cooking. But if you think mustard oil works on its own, wait until you try it as a hair growth elixir by mixing it with simple yet magical ingredients. These additions not only promote hair growth but also treat dandruff, dryness, premature graying, and strengthen hair overall.

Here’s your guide to turning ordinary mustard oil into the best hair oil you can make at home:
1. Curry Leaves
These simple green leaves enhance hair growth; they are rich in beta-carotene, amino acids, antioxidants, and iron, strengthening hair follicles and preventing thinning from the roots. To mix with mustard oil, take a handful of washed and dried curry leaves and add them to warm mustard oil. Heat until the leaves darken and become crispy. After cooling and straining, you will have a deeply nourishing mixture that combats hair loss and promotes growth. Use it twice a week to notice thicker, shinier, and stronger hair.
2. Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek is rich in protein, mucilage, and nicotinic acid. Its seeds strengthen hair roots, reduce breakage, help treat stubborn dandruff, soothe itchy scalp, and improve overall hair texture. To prepare fenugreek-infused mustard oil, lightly crush two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds and place them in a small pot of mustard oil. Heat gently until the seeds swell slightly and change color. After cooling and straining, massage your scalp with this oil at least once a week. It leaves the scalp feeling refreshed, nourished, and calm.
3. Hibiscus
Hibiscus contains amino acids that promote keratin production, prevent premature graying, and give hair shine without weighing it down. When mixed with mustard oil, hibiscus balances the oil’s heat while enhancing its growth benefits. Take 3–4 fresh hibiscus flowers and add them to warm mustard oil, leaving them on low heat for a few minutes. The oil gradually acquires a reddish color and a pleasant herbal fragrance. Regular use keeps hair smooth, easy to comb, and healthy—ideal for dry, curly, or coarse hair.
4. Onion Juice
Sulfur in onion juice boosts collagen production, strengthening hair follicles and accelerating growth. It also stimulates blood circulation in the scalp. To use onion with mustard oil, grate a medium onion, extract its juice, and mix it with warm mustard oil in a 1:4 ratio. Heat the oil gently, then massage the mixture into your scalp and leave it on for at least an hour before washing. Alternatively, you can soak chopped onion in mustard oil for a week to get a milder but equally effective mixture.
