Regular exchanges of fallen soldiers’ remains take place between the two countries, representing one of the few remaining areas of limited cooperation between the warring parties.

Moscow’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, stated on social media: "The bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers were handed over to Ukraine. Russia received the bodies of 35 Russian fighters." He posted an image showing individuals in white protective suits and blue gloves unloading a white body bag from the back of a refrigerated truck.

Hundreds of thousands of soldiers have been killed in the war, which has now entered its fifth year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

Negotiators from both countries arrived in Geneva on Thursday for separate talks with U.S. officials. These meetings are part of a difficult negotiating process pushed by U.S. President Donald Trump in an effort to bring an end to the fighting.
