Responding to journalists’ questions about whether Putin had indeed rejected the American proposal, Peskov said: “No, that is not true. In fact, there was a direct exchange of views for the first time yesterday. As stated, some elements were accepted, while others were deemed unacceptable.”
He added: “This is a normal process involving the search for compromises. Russia highly values President Trump’s political will to resolve the situation in Ukraine peacefully,” noting that “Russia is ready to meet with the Trump administration as long as necessary to resolve the situation in Ukraine.”
Peskov continued: “We are all prepared to meet with the Trump administration for as long as it takes to reach a peaceful settlement.”
He explained that Russia and the United States are currently working at the expert level, and the outcomes of these discussions are expected to form the basis for high-level contacts.
Peskov also said: “Russia hopes that the American side will adhere to the principle of silence within the framework of the Ukrainian settlement negotiations.” When asked about the technical aspects of the talks between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Stephen Vitkov, he replied: “We will adhere to this principle, and we hope our American counterparts will do the same,” stressing that “Moscow does not support ‘loud diplomacy,’ and neither does Washington.”
The Kremlin spokesperson added that “Europeans are not participating in the peace process in Ukraine because they are obsessed with the idea of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia,” pointing out that Europe’s shift toward costly energy sources instead of Russian gas “will accelerate the loss of its leading economic capabilities.”
