BARCELONA – Workers in the shipping and unloading union in
the port of Barcelona have refused to load or unload any military shipments
during Israel's war on Gaza. They called for the protection of civilians in
conflict areas.

This decision follows a similar move by Belgian transport
unions last week.
Josep Maria Duñó, the union's secretary, stated that their
symbolic decision aims to encourage other Spanish ports to follow suit. This
union represents 1,200 workers in the port of Barcelona according to Khaberni.
Duñó suggested that peace organizations could help the union
identify containers carrying military equipment. He believes that military
shipments pass through Barcelona as it is a port handling various types of
goods.
It is unclear which organizations, if any, have agreed to
assist the union in this effort. The Barcelona Port Authority declined to
comment, stating that they do not have information on military shipments.
Spain exported military equipment worth 1.3 billion euros in
the first half of 2022. Of this, nine million euros' worth of shipments went to
Israel, according to the latest available official data.
Last week, the Spanish government announced that it does not
plan to export any deadly military equipment for use in Israel's war on Gaza.
The union of shipping and unloading workers in the port of Barcelona opposes
all forms of violence, including Israel and the Palestinian territories. Their
boycott aims to protect civilians everywhere.
