The collapsed mine falls under the jurisdiction of River Nile State and is situated in a remote desert region north of Haya and south of Al-Kileis.
This is not the first such incident in Howeid. A similar collapse occurred in April, resulting in injuries and material damage.
Following the tragedy, families of the victims and human rights activists have called for an urgent and independent investigation into the causes of the collapse. They are also demanding improved regulation of traditional mining operations, enforcement of safety standards, and deployment of rescue resources in these remote and high-risk areas.
The incident once again highlights the hazardous conditions surrounding artisanal gold mining in Sudan, a sector that employs thousands but often lacks basic safety protocols.
