The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that the decision was made on Sunday "in accordance with the firm will and unanimous desire of all delegates" at the Party’s Ninth Congress.
This multi-day congress is held once every five years, offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a state where even the smallest details of daily life are shrouded in total secrecy. The congress outlines the state’s direction on all fronts, ranging from housing construction to war planning.
In his opening speech on Thursday, Kim pledged to improve living standards and provided insight into the economic pressures facing his sanctions-hit country.
He stated that the Party today "faces major and urgent historical tasks to strengthen the economic structure and the people's standard of living, and to bring about a transformation in all aspects of official and social life as quickly as possible."
